TL;DR: Start from the beginning — chapter 1 / episode 1. One Piece does not work well if you skip ahead. The manga is faster and has no filler. If watching the anime, use a filler skip list and consider switching to manga after the Water 7 Arc.
Manga or Anime First?
This is the first question every new fan asks. The honest answer:
Manga is recommended if you want the full experience without filler, faster pacing, and Oda's original art. The anime has beautiful moments but also significant stretches of slow pacing, especially pre-timeskip.
Anime is fine if you prefer watching over reading. The voice acting, music, and certain emotional moments hit differently animated. Just be prepared to use a filler skip list.
You can also start with anime and switch to manga — many fans do this around the Water 7 / Enies Lobby arc where the manga's pacing significantly outperforms the anime.

Tips for New Readers
On pacing: The first 100 chapters are faster-paced and simpler than what comes later. Don't judge the full series on the East Blue arcs — One Piece scales enormously in complexity and payoff.
On spoilers: The community is generally good about spoiler tags. Avoid One Piece subreddits and social media until you're caught up, or until you've at least passed Marineford.
On investment: Many readers say One Piece "clicked" for them at one of these moments: Nami's backstory (Arlong Park), the Going Merry farewell (Enies Lobby), or Ace's death (Marineford). Give it at least until Arlong Park before deciding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to read/watch filler? No. Filler is non-canon and has no bearing on the main story. Some arcs (like G-8) are fan favourites, but none are required.
Can I start with the anime and switch to manga? Yes, and many do. A common switch point is after the Marineford Arc, or at Dressrosa where the anime pacing becomes very slow.
How long does it take to catch up? The manga has over 1,100 chapters. At a typical reading pace of 50–70 chapters per day, catching up takes 2–3 weeks. The anime is 1,100+ episodes — significantly longer.
