The international standard for AI management systems, published by ISO and IEC. Provides a framework for organizations to establish, implement, maintain, and continuously improve their AI governance practices. Certification to ISO 42001 is emerging as a signal of AI governance maturity in enterprise procurement.
ISO 42001 certification is not legally required but is increasingly expected in enterprise sales cycles and regulated industries. The standard overlaps with some AI Act obligations, such as risk management and documentation, but it is not a harmonised standard, so certification does not by itself show AI Act compliance. For most small teams, studying the standard's requirements (available in summary form) and building a governance program that meets its key principles is more practical than seeking formal certification in the near term.
